An elderly woman who lives a reclusive life in Serbia has reportedly given away the fortune she inherited from her estranged husband in Australia, reports the BBC.
Marija Zlatic, who is now 86-years-old, moved with her husband to Western Australia in the 1950s, where he found work as a carpenter. However, she returned to Serbia after only 18 months to care for her mother, who was unwell, while her husband Momcilo remained in Australia.
Marija never returned to Australia and her husband never came back to Serbia, but instead became a successful cattle rancher in Australia. When he died in 2011 he left an estate worth around A$3 million.
It took Marija a number of years to establish all the relevant information about her estranged husband’s death, but last year she finally discovered that she would receive an inheritance worth around A$940,000 after taxes.
Surprisingly however, Marija has said that she is happy with her simple life and has no need for this money, reports the BBC, and instead has chosen to give it away to the people in her local community who help to look after her.
