The “Pokemon Go” phenomenon has taken the nation by storm. While this free augmented reality game has been praised for getting people out of the house, there also appears to be some risks and pitfalls associated to it.
Before you embark on the Pokemon journey you should ensure that you have (1) a charged phone, (2) ample time, (3) no desire to live in the real world and (4) a valid Will.
While points 1 to 3 inclusive are said with tongue in cheek, having a valid Will is something Pokemon Go users and people in general should consider seriously.
In a recent online article, a Professor of Law at Texas Tech University School of Law was quoted saying “death by Pokemon is coming... Pokemon users will have all sorts of accidents as they use the program while walking, riding and driving.”
The game itself gives players a warning to “remember to be alert at all times” and “stay aware of your surroundings” however this does not seem to be effective.
In Australia, two drivers were caught within the same hour playing Pokemon Go on the road. On 14 July 2016, NSW Police tweet “What do you get when you mix driving & Pokémon Go? $325 and 4 Demerit Points. Police detect 2 drivers in 1 hour”.
