As well as making sure arrangements are in place to look after your loved ones after your death, writing a Will is an excellent way to leave a gift to a charitable cause that is close to your heart.
Charitable bequests are a common component of Wills and estate plans, and are a valued source of much needed funds for many of the country's charities.
In one recently reported case, a New South Wales man left £100,000 to the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), to help fund developments in cancer research.
The Maitland Mercury reports that Anthony Eccleston died in October last year from after suffering from bowel, liver and brain cancer.
The 59-year-old from Bolwarra Heights wanted to help other sufferers of the disease, and agreed with his wife that a large portion of his savings should be used in this way after his death. She subsequently donated the money in his memory as they had discussed.
The HMRI has expressed its gratitude for the gift, with a spokesperson describing a bequest as a "gift that kept giving".
