A dispute is ongoing in Sydney between residents and Waverley Council over plans put forward by the Council to redevelop Bondi Pavilion, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
The iconic building has been part of the Bondi landscape since the early 1900s and provides an important community space that offers, amongst other facilities, a theatre, music studios and a variety of rooms available for community groups to hire.
The Council’s proposals include plans to turn the first floor of the Pavilion into space for cafes and restaurants, but residents are concerned that this will effectively mean the privatisation of the Pavilion and a reduction in the amount of space available for community activities.
However, the Mayor of Waverley Council, who is backing the redevelopment proposals, has said that the Pavilion desperately needs a heritage upgrade and allowing more commercial businesses into the Pavilion will help to play for the work needed. The cost of the plans are estimated to be around $38 million
Despite the opposition of some residents, the Council had voted to move the redevelopment process to the next stage, which involves a formal development application. However, the Sydney Morning Herald reports that a motion has been raised to overturn this decision, and the Council are to reconvene shortly to discuss this.
We will be following developments with interest.
